Final was held in the auditorium of the Superior Court of Justice of Arequipa
The team of Prescott Anglo American School won the debate and argument competition for schoolchildren “Lawyer for a Day”, organized by the Department of Law and Political Science from Saint Paul Catholic University (UCSP), for 11 years. The purpose is to motivate dialogue, reflection and practice of fundamental rights, mainly in fourth and fifth secondary school students, and bring them closer to the exercise of fair citizenship.
In this edition, teams from 26 educational institutions in Arequipa participated. The competition began in September, with the call and development of Law and Justice Training workshops for schoolchildren, who then had to prepare written reports and oral arguments of their positions. The hypothetical case they worked on dealt with educational freedom and religious freedom, in a school with a religious identity.
After passing the general and elimination rounds, the final was held in the Superior Court of Justice of Arequipa (CSJA). Only the teams from Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and Prescott schools reached this phase. They debated and supported their positions before a jury made up of the president of the CSJA, César de la Cuba, the dean of the UCSP Faculty of Law, Dr. Daniel Ugarte and the director of the Law School, Mgtr. Gabriela Carpio.
“It was a close competition and a difficult decision,” said Mgtr. Carpio Valderrama, after announcing the Advocatus group, from Prescott School, as the winner. It was made up of Valeria Olazo Cornejo, Valeria Álvarez Steffen, Mathias Elar Curo Rodríguez and Roxana Arista Zeballos. In addition, Valeria Olazo won as the best speaker of the competition. They also recognized her teacher, Ernesto Talavera Tapia.
“It is the third time that I have participated in this competition and the first time that I have won as a team. It is gratifying to have won the champion award. This competition was full of learning, we have learned to communicate, to argue and on the basis of law. In the future I want to be a lawyer, because I am passionate about litigating, especially in just cases,” said Valeria, who is in her fourth year of high school.
Lawyer for a day
The competition was created as an academic proposal to encourage young schoolchildren to have a better connection and respect for the rule of law, and to gain an intimate knowledge of the practice of law.
“I reiterate our commitment as a university and faculty to contribute to the development of culture, which puts the person and their dignity, justice and solidarity first to address the problems that arise in society. We hope that this competition fulfills this,” said Dr. Daniel Ugarte.
He also highlighted that the two finalist teams lived up to the expectations of the organization and the CSJA.
While the president of the CSJA, Dr. César de la Cuba Chirinos, and also a Law professor at UCSP, highlighted that this competition allows the talent of future lawyers to be discovered and, for the institution he directs, to get closer and show itself to society. so that they know their functions and work.
At the closing ceremony, honorable mentions were also awarded to the best writings and best speakers in the different stages of the contest, and the team of the college Our Lady of the Assumption, which came in second place. This activity was attended by the schoolchildren, their coordinating teachers, the directors of the finalist schools and parents.
