The process of redefining what ministry will be in the Interim United Organization of the Presbyterian Church (USA) became a little clearer on Monday. Plans have been announced to restructure several programs affecting the ministries of Theology, Education and Evangelism, Compassion, Peace and Justice, Presbyterian Historical Society, and Communications.
Over the past year, Rev. Jihyun Oh, who is currently the executive director and general secretary of the PC (USA) General Assembly, met with leaders including Hon. Bronwen Boswell, general secretary of the PC (USA) General Assembly, and Dr. Diane Moffett, President and Executive Director of the Presbyterian Mission Group, to support the core mission and ministry priorities of the 2025-26 budget approved by GA: Board support mediators, leadership development, restorative justice , the life of the Communion, strategic partnerships and operations.
“These decisions are part of a long process that tries to align the mission and ministry of two Senate groups with the needs of the Church, society and our name today half as much as when have the current structures been put in place and ministry and discipleship opportunities today? . our values, as well as our mission and ministerial priorities
The plans include
Reorganization of the work of the peace program: The ministry has been a vital part of the Presbyterian Mission Group for many years. The program will be rolled out as a single ministry, but plans are underway to integrate this work into existing ministries in the future. As part of this, the prevention of armed violence will be transferred to the Office of Public Evidence.
Integration of the Life Congregations program in 1001 New Worship Cweapon: This integrated ministry can focus resources on nurturing existing congregations and expanding the work to create new communities of worship. This step involves deeper integration with the cross-cultural partners of Racial Equality and Women’s Ministry (RE&WIM).
Rearranging the office of theology and worship: The work will be integrated into existing ministries, and a new emphasis will be placed on leadership development for all ages and expressions of the Church.
Review of committees/boards: The Board of the Presbyterian Historical Society, the Educator Certification Committee, and advisory committees related to One Big Hour of Sharing (advisory committees for Clerical Disaster Relief, People’s Self-Improvement, and the Hunger Program) will suspend their in-person meetings in in 2025 while the Union Commission conducts a review of all committees related to the Interim United Agency.
Reprints Presbyterian Historical Society Journal of Presbyterian History: The journal will cease to be an academic publication after 2025 and will be replaced by an online version with an ecclesiastical proclamation.
The site changes will help achieve a sustainable and balanced 2025-26 budget, including the reductions of $5 million over two years approved by the 226th General Assembly, and as a result there will be staff reductions in these areas.
“We have informed World Mission staff as well as our partners around the world that we anticipate significant changes in the way we engage with our partners in the future , and we are currently reviewing how our organization will be structured in 2025,” says Mr O. “We also expect reductions in 2025, once the process this is ready
