On March 27, La Poste issues a block of a postage stamp on the occasion of the centenary of the death of Gustave Eiffel (1832-1923).
An internationally renowned engineer, the name of Gustave Eiffel will forever be associated with Paris and its famous 300-metre high tower. But the man had also “signed” other works, such as the viaducts of Porto (Portugal) and Garabit (in Cantal in Auvergne), the dome of the observatory of Nice or the station of Budapest (Hungary ).
For this tribute, La Poste has joined forces with the association of the descendants of Gustave Eiffel, created in 1995 by the Eiffel family, which works to defend the memory and image of his grandfather. For the time being, the visual remains under embargo. The format of this stamp – which will be printed in 350,000 copies – will be 52 x 40.85 mm.
An advance sale of the stamp, with First Day postmark, will take place in three cities in France, including Dijon (Côte-d’Or), his hometown, Thursday March 23 and Friday March 24, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the Cité International of Gastronomy and Wine. An unveiling scene is thus scheduled at 9:45 a.m. at the “Temporary office first day”, installed in the building’s reception hall.
