One of the oldest sailboats in Europe has been in Marseille since Monday October 9 for a technical exercise in preparation for the arrival of the Olympic flame for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
May 8, 2024 will be the big day for Belem. The Olympic flame will then arrive from Athens to Marseille aboard the three-masted ship. Seven months before the big day, the 58-meter sailboat was on Monday October 9 in the harbor of the Marseille city for a dress rehearsal of the ceremony. He left the city this Wednesday towards Sanary-sur-Mer.
An amateur videographer captured the famous rigging using a drone. We see the Belem leaving the harbor of Marseille, passing the Château d’If and the Frioul to reach the open sea.
This first test was an opportunity to time the boat’s arrival time in the Old Port of Marseille as well as the necessary maneuvers, notably mooring in the Old Port. If the entire scenario of the flame ceremony is a surprise, we know that the flame bearer will run on a 400 square meter floating pontoon and a 100 meter long track before arriving at the dock.
