“Prensa Latina Reports: COVID-19 Leaves Guatemala’s Municipalities in the Red Without Functioning governance.”

According to the update published by the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance, in the first case there are 285 localities, while they classify in the second, 55.

Unlike the previous report, now there are no green municipalities, the so-called new normality, a category that Quetzaltenango reached then.

The traffic light takes into account certain criteria to assess the epidemiological situation, such as the incidence of confirmed cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days, the cumulative percentage of two-dose vaccination scheme in people over 12 years of age, and positive SARS-CoV-2 tests.

Although infections continue to decline, the health authorities insist on maintaining social distancing and the use of masks in closed spaces as preventive measures, mainly for vulnerable groups.

On March 13, Guatemala celebrated its three-year pandemic, when local media outlets warned about the low vaccination rate, less than 50 percent of the estimated population.

Currently there are 1,240,380 accumulated cases and 20,183 people died from Covid-19, one of the highest figures in Central America.
