Premiere of ‘Whom’ by Jagoba Astiazar, Winner of 1st SGAE Euskadi Foundation Composition Award, at Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga Conservatory of Music

He Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga Conservatory of Music of Bilbao hosts the February 3 at 7:00 p.m. the premiere of Whomof Jagoba in Astiazarfruit of 1st SGAE Euskadi Foundation Composition Award obtained last July by the Gipuzkoan composer.

To the 3,000 euros earned then is added the execution of a newly created work by the Ensemble Kuraia, at the XXX Contemporary Music Meeting, which will take place this Saturday at the aforementioned municipal training center. Admission to the concert is free until capacity is reached.

The members of the SGAE Euskadi Foundation were eligible for the 1st Composition Prize. SGAE from any country in the world and of any age residing in the Basque Country, with an already composed, original work of chamber music for between 3 and 8 musicians, and a duration of between 8 and 12 minutes (including electroacoustic works for a minimum of 3 interpreters). Adaptations of works by other authors or those that used fragments of other people’s works were not admitted.

The jury, composed of Maria Eugenia Luc (composer and artistic director of Kuraia), Joseba Torre (composer) and Pascal Gaigne (composer and member of the Territorial Council of SGAE Euskadi), chose the composition presented by Astiazaran (Zotz), from among twenty proposals.

The second call for this award is already underway and will be developed throughout 2024, in similar terms to the first edition.

About the author

Higher Degree in Music in the specialties of Composition and Instruments of traditional and popular music, and Master in Contemporary Creation at the Higher Center of the Basque Country Musikene, his final degree work was awarded in 2012 with the Orfeón Donostiarra/Universidad del Basque Country to musical research.

The music of Jagoba Astiazaran (Zestoa, Gipuzkoa, 1986) has been conducted by prestigious conductors such as Arturo Tamayo, Carlo Boccadoro or Nacho de Paz, and performed by the Euskadiko Orkestra, the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra (BOS) or the international Ensemble groups Intercontemporaine, Ensemble Recherche, Ensemble Sillages, Sentieri Selvaggi and the Diotima quartet, among others.

He has numerous and varied distinctions, such as the First Prize in the Bicentennial Work of San Sebastian competition and the status of Finalist in the Feeding Music International Composition Competition, organized by the Italian pavilion of the 2015 Milan Universal Exhibition.

Since 2008 he has been a member of the Municipal Txistularis Band of San Sebastián and a teacher at the Municipal School of Music and Dance. He has also worked as a teacher at the Higher Basque Country Music Center Musikene and at the Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga Conservatory in Bilbao.
