The Munich Mobility Fair will be the location of the premiere of several interesting new products from the BMW workshop.
Probably the most striking BMW news for what was originally the Munich Motor Show, now the Mobility Fair, will be the premiere of the Vision Neue Klasse concept, which should show the shape of the next generation of electric cars from the Munich automaker. The concept should represent the evolution of both the Vision Circular and Vision Dee concepts, while according to brand CEO Oliver Zipse, it should be relatively close to production form.
In addition to a purely electric drive, the new concept is also expected to make significant changes in the area of exterior and interior design, as well as the introduction of new technologies and the user environment.
However, an important premiere will also be the official presentation of plug-in hybrid drives for the new BMW five-series, which should reach the market at the beginning of next year. Customers will have a choice of two versions – four-cylinder and six-cylinder.
The basic plug-in hybrid BMW 530e will bring a combination of gasoline four-cylinder engine and electric motor, which should offer a combined output of 220 kW, i.e. roughly 300 horsepower, at the rear wheels. The more powerful version of the 550e xDrive will already bring a combination of an in-line six-cylinder and an electric motor, which will offer a power of 360 kW (490 hp) and all-wheel drive.
The electric motor is integrated into the eight-speed Steptronic Sport automatic transmission and, in the top version of the 550e xDrive, generates a maximum output of 145 kW (197 hp) and up to 280 Nm of torque. However, thanks to the special patented “pre-gearing”, the electric motor can offer a short-term torque of up to 450 Nm.
Both models should have a Lithium-ion battery with a usable capacity of 19.4 kWh, which will offer a purely electric range of 87 to 101 km for the weaker model, or 79 to 90 km for the six-cylinder plug-in hybrid. The battery will be stored in the chassis, so it will not limit the storage space. The on-board charger should have a power of up to 7.4 kW, thanks to which a full charge should only take about 3 hours.
Another interesting model with an electric drive will be the BMW iX5 Hydrogen, i.e. the prototype of the premium Munich SUV with hydrogen fuel cell technology. The car is produced in limited quantities and used by the automaker for presentations and testing. The interest in this concept could then probably decide the further future of this technology at BMW.
But other BMW models will also get space. In Munich, for example, the armored BMW i7 Protection will have its exhibition premiere, which should be the very first factory armored sedan with a purely electric drive in the world. However, the entire range of electric models from the BMW workshop should also be on display, i.e. iX1, i4, i5, iX and i7.
There will also be new models of the Mini brand. In Munich, both the new fully electric version of the Mini Cooper and the new Mini Countryman with the option of internal combustion and purely electric drive should have their premiere. The plug-in hybrid will no longer be available.
But fans of BMW Motorrad’s moto division will also get their money’s worth, which will bring an unusual purely electric city scooter CE 02, called the eParkourer by the company, to the festival.
