Premiere of Documentary: “The Legend Lives On: MPS and the Legacy of Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer”

“The legend lives on,” says a press release from the Saba/MPS association. The legend is called MPS. A 90-minute documentary about the legendary music label from the Black Forest and about the life’s work of Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer will premiere on Saturday, September 9th, as part of the “Jazzin The Black Forest” festival in the Theater am Ring

Some of the MPS musicians, such as Monty Alexander, Joachim Kühn, Jasper van’t Hof, Jean-Luc Ponty, Eberhard Weber and Charly Antolini have their say, as does the late Rolf Kühn. In addition, Marlies Brunner-Schwer, who died in the spring, can be seen on the theater’s big screen, as well as her son Andreas, Lisa Boulton and a few others. The filmmakers Sache Schmidt and Micha Bojanowski, who have been working on the documentation of the MPS world since 2019, will be present at the film premiere.

Almost 20 years ago, when Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer (1927-2004) was still alive, the Baden-Baden film producer Elke Baur documented the history of the MPS. As some of the rights have expired, this film can no longer be shown publicly. A lot has changed since then. In 1983, Brunner-Schwer sold the MPS label to Deutsche Grammophon, and Universal later took over the rights. The label has belonged to Edel-Music since 2014. For many years, most of MPS’ music treasures slumbered in archives, only a few CD samplers were released. From 2014, old MPS LPs were reissued, carefully with the design from the old Saba/MPS times. In 2009 the MPS studio on Richthofenstrasse was revived. Since then there have been numerous tours of the recording studio and many sound recordings, most recently analog, on the old tape machines.

In 2019 Julia Kadel, the pianist who will be heard at the jazz festival on Friday, recorded an LP in analog tradition for the MPS label. That was worth a story to Spiegel magazine. The film producer Micha Bojanowski read them, and that’s how the idea of making a film about MPS came about.

The film is a piece of local history. Before it will be shown on television, it will premiere at the Theater am Ring in Villingen. After the movie, there will be another “Funky Voyage” in the Jazzkeller. On Friday Julia Kadel can be heard as part of the festival program and on Sunday Adele Neuhauser with Edi Nulz will come to the end. Tickets are available from Tourist-Info & Ticket-Service Franziskaner Kulturzentrum Villingen, Tourist-Info and Ticket-Service Bahnhof Schwenningen as well as from all ticket offices in the Kulturticket Schwarzwald-Baar-Heuberg network or online at www.villingen-schwenningen.de/tickets.
