Premiere of Decadent Drama “Fire Face” by Marius von Mayenburg in Latvia at Latvian National Theater

On April 11, 2024, the premiere of the decadent drama “Fire Face” by the famous German playwright Marius von Mayenburg, created by the young director Henrijs Arājs, will take place in the Actors’ Hall of the Latvian National Theater.

“This show is about desperation. About young people who seem to be needed by no one. About a world in which only the previous generation dominates as a rule. About revenge born from total senselessness and confusion. About not dating, running away, depression, misunderstood love and more , and more, and more…” says Henrijs Araj about the production.

Since the creation and staging of the play “Fire” (1997) in Munich (1998) and soon after in English in London (2000), Maienburg is known as one of the most talented contemporary German playwrights. The play has gained popularity in many parts of the world and is being staged for the first time in Latvia this year.

Henrijs Arājs started his career as an actor at the age of 17, later proving himself also in a movie role in Dāvja Sīmanis’s film “Father’s Night” and now he has set himself a higher goal – to stage Mayenburg’s decadent drama.

The director’s creative search leads the viewer into a dramatic world – a labyrinth ruled by father and mother, which is like a frozen image of what a family home should be. Teenagers Olga and Kurts cannot find their place in the shadow of their parents and a way out of it. Their preparation for the adult world is characterized by experimentation and obsession, which leads to a shocking finale as they strive for greater independence from their parents.

However, in this labyrinth, we encounter an open theatrical language full of irony and play, which sheds light on very important questions of western civilization.

Is it hardly possible to discover the secrets of nature without delving into the essence of man? Through the prism of this philosophy, man is seen as unstable and impermanent. Contradictions and conflict in modern human relations is an observation of the ancient Greek Heraclitus, that is, everything in opposition creates a current of forces. This results in heat and life form. Therefore, in his existing world, objects were in motion and consisted of one element. Fire.

Marius von Mayenburg and Henry Araj in the divisive, traumatized modern world, like Heraclitus, invite us not to step into the same river twice. Invites you to break out of the shadows and labyrinths of the past, to be purified in the fire, finding in yourself the power to create not destruction in this world, but life and warmth.
