In October, the Premier League announced the historic decision to have a match in the middle of Christmas Eve, for the first time since 1995, which was met with sharp criticism.
On the other hand, it was good news for all the Chelsea dads who usually fall asleep in front of Donald Duck, they probably thought.
But it turned out to be the exact opposite.
Nightmare miss
Chelsea put in a really lackluster effort away at Molineux Stadium and the home team controlled most of the match. Chelsea did miss a free-kick in the first half, after Raheem Sterling shot himself in a free-kick with three free players.
Then Mario Lemina made it 1-0 on a corner header in the 51st minute.
– It was hanging in the air, in the end it was one corner too many, says commentator Axel Olsson in Viaplay’s broadcast.
Matthew Doherty settled the match with his 2–0 goal in extra time.
Nkunku debutmålskytt
Chelsea’s giant signing Christopher Nkunku, who has been injured at the start of the season, certainly lit the candle and did not let hope fade when he reduced on his Premier League debut just a minute later.
But it went dark again soon after when the referee blew the match to 2-1.
The results now mean the crisis is deepening for Chelsea, who have just one win in their last four games and are in tenth place in the Premier League.
