Premier League suspends new contract in Russia

The Russians will not be able to follow the matches of Cristiano Ronaldo, Mohamed Salah and Kevin de Bruyne. According to “L’Equipe”, due to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, the authorities of the Premier League, English football championship, have decided to suspend their contract with the Russian channel Match TV. The latter, owned by Gazprom, was to broadcast the competition for the period from 2022 to 2028.

Match TV was to pay 50 million euros per year

Already, last March, at the beginning of the war, the Premier League had taken the decision to interrupt the television rights contract with the Russian broadcaster Rambler. The latter held all the sporting rights of the British championship until the end of the 2021-2022 season. During the last tender in Russia, Match TV had won all the lots for a payment of 43 million pounds (50 million euros) per year.

English clubs intend to suspend this agreement as long as the military conflict in Ukraine continues. For the English football league, considered by observers to be the best league in Europe, the contract signed with Russia does not weigh much compared to the global broadcasting rights which will bring in 5.8 billion euros for the period of 2022-2025, according to the sports daily.
