The math has changed in the fight to avoid relegation from the Premier League.
From an unusual nine-team fight at the end of March, the field has been reduced to six candidates with a month to go in the season. It seems that only one’s fate is decided.
Southampton’s 11-year run in the top flight looks set to come to an end after the team settled in bottom place, six points shy of permanence. He has added just three units in eight games.
Meanwhile, Crystal Palace, Wolverhampton and Bournemouth – who are under their second manager of the season – are fit and have delivered results at the ideal time to stay out of harm’s way.
This leaves five teams fighting not to take the other places in the relegation zone along with Southampton. There are some big names in this group.
Like Everton, who have been English champions nine times and have been constantly in the first division since 1954. Or Leicester, who against all odds were champions seven years ago. Or West Ham, who have played in European tournaments the last two seasons after finishing sixth and seventh.
They all have five games left except West Ham, with six.
This is a look at the teams that are in danger of relegation:
SOUTHAMPTON (20mo, 24 puntos)
If the Saints lose — as expected — to Newcastle on Sunday and beat Nottingham Forest on May 8, their fate could be sealed with three games to go. Beating Newcastle would change everything and Southampton drew 3-3 with Arsenal last week.
EVERTON (19mo, 28 points)
The arrival of Sean Dyche at the helm of the team at the end of January did not have the expected impact. In fact, the team has won only three of 13 meetings under the new manager and none of his last six.
LEICESTER (18mo, 29 points)
A win against Wolves and a draw with Leeds in their last two meetings brought relief to Leicester, who had lost eight of their previous nine meetings.
NOTTINGHAM FOREST (17mo, 30 puntos)
With a win against Brighton on Wednesday, Forest generated optimism that they will not immediately return to the second division and still have an important game against Southampton.
LEEDS (16th, 30 points)
Leeds survived relegation last season thanks to a final round win and could make it back to the season finale, especially if they lose to Bournemouth on Sunday.
WEST HAM (15mo, 34 puntos)
West Ham are unlikely to be relegated after winning three of their last six games and with a team that has higher quality than their relegation rivals.
