Premier League clubs met this Tuesday to harmonize and decide on new guidelines for the transfer window. Among them, the amortization time of a transfer. New rules that will change the situation.
The January transfer window begins on January 1 and already there are numerous needs for several Premier League clubs. Pochettino asked for reinforcements from Chelsea, Erik Ten Hag needs new blood at Manchester United, and even Pep Guardiola et Jurgen Klopp want to strengthen themselves. But all these clubs will have to take into account a new element: the reduction in the amortization time of the cost of a player.
In fact, the English clubs met this Tuesday during the general assembly of the Premier League . They then defined the implementation of a new rule, limiting the period over which the payment of a player’s cost can be spread to 5 years. In other words its depreciation on an accounting balance sheet plan. But before that, the clubs of Premier League did not have a time limit to kill a player.
The clubs which benefited from it will have to change their paradigm
This system has benefited several clubs and has made it possible in certain cases to circumvent the rules of financial fair play. A player purchased for 70 Million could therefore see his investment spread over as long as necessary. For Mykhailo Mudryk for example, Chelsea spread this sum over 8 and a half years by giving him the longest contract in the PL, or in accounting terms, around 9 million per year.
Same thing for Caicedo or Fernandez, who Todd Boehly financed with contracts lasting until 2031 and amortization over as many years. This allowed Chelsea to spend 1 billion Euros in 18 months on the market, and the team plans to strengthen further this winter. But Chelsea is not alone, Tottenham has just done the same with Destiny Udogie by extending it until 2030.
The clubs therefore put an end to this excitement by regulating the duration to 5 years in order to establish common equality. This is a good thing, we can bet, that clubs will have to take into account. Clubs which have not finished recruiting in view of the new record TV rights which have just been allocated.
