Martin Semmens, president of Southampton, argues that Premier League football could start earlier than the rules allow. In this way, football can ensure that people who are at home have something to do.
English football is currently suspended until at least April 30, but the competitions must be completed at the time. “If people are safe and we don’t tire the police and security too much, the government will want us to play again, because that’s how we provide entertainment,” Semmens told the BBC.
The people would benefit from a return of the Premier League, he thinks. “If people have to sit at home for another month and a game is played every day, that is only good,” he thinks. “Not because we are essential, but because we can entertain people and because we can show that we are fighting back.”
Semmens is hopeful that the competition can be completed before June 30, but has no idea when that can happen.
