Suara.com – A new study finds corona virus Covid-19 varian Delta can increase the risk of complications in pregnant mother which is not injected Covid-19 vaccine.
Studies published in American Journal of Obstrentic and Gynecology, analyzed severe Covid-19 coronavirus infections in pregnant women as the highly contagious Delta variant became dominant in several countries.
The study, from May 2020 to September 2021, found that 1,515 pregnant women diagnosed as positive for the Covid-19 coronavirus were recorded in the Dallas public health system. A total of 82 cases were severe Covid-19 corona virus infections, of which 81 of them had not been vaccinated against Covid-19 and 11 others required ventilators.
Research results also show that around 5 percent of pregnant women are battling severe COVID-19 coronavirus infections until March 2021. Finally, this number increases to 10-15 percent by the end of the summer, when the Delta variant begins to increase.
Emily Adhikar, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and lead researcher on the study, expressed her concern for pregnant women who have not been given the Covid-19 vaccine.
“I am very worried about what might happen in the future to pregnant women who have not been vaccinated. We have seen this Delta variant make some people suffer seriously, especially pregnant women who have not been vaccinated,” said Adhikar, quoted from the statement. Fox News.
The study also concluded that pregnant women diagnosed with the Delta variant were more likely to suffer from severe and less likely to be hospitalized.
Aaron Glatt, an infectious disease specialist and spokesman for the Infectious Diseases Society of America, who was not directly involved with the study, said pregnant women are among the group at risk for severe COVID-19 infection if infected.
Therefore, researchers urge pregnant women to inject the Covid-19 vaccine as the best prevention method. Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a health warning urging pregnant women or those trying to become pregnant to inject the Covid-19 vaccine.
As of September 27, 2021, CDC data shows that more than 125,000 laboratory-confirmed cases of the Covid-19 coronavirus were pregnant women, 22,000 of whom required hospitalization and 161 died. Despite the severe risk, the CDC reports that only about 31 percent of pregnant women are 18 to 49 years old
