Sex scenes can be difficult for actors for a variety of reasons. But for comedian Seth Rogen, his own sex scene in Pregnant it was especially difficult, and I was determined to make it as comfortable as possible.
So the then-newcomer decided to take Sean Connery’s advice to help him with the shot. But when it came time to finally do the sex scene with Katherine Heigl, it largely flopped.
Seth Rogen found the sex scenes in ‘Knocked Up’ a bit ‘nervous’
As some may know, Judd Apatow’s 2007 film Pregnant follows Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl as leads. The film followed a twenty-something drug addict who impregnated a one-night stand that he felt was out of his league. Due to the content of the film, of course there was a sex scene between Heigl and Rogen. But it was not something Rogen found easy at first.
“Yeah, it’s really a bit stressful, you know. If I was 18 years old, I would literally be further than ever with a girl,” Rogen once told Collider. “Basically you’re… you’re dry hump; I don’t know if you can say that, but I will. You’re dry fucking a girl you don’t know very well, and I was afraid to break a sweat on her.
But the fact that the film was a comedy was something that Rogen felt would help him get through the ordeal.
“They are nerves, but fortunately they are comic sex scenes, supposedly. So that kind of help; It’s not like I’m supposed to be acting sexy. There are lines like, ‘This is my new record’ in there; so that takes some of the pressure off me to look attractive and sexy, which is good,” she added.
Seth Rogen Mistakenly Turned To Sean Connery For Help With His Sex Scene — And It Failed
Seeing that she didn’t want her sex scene with Heigl to be a complete disaster, the long shot The actor wanted to be prepared. To prepare for the scene, he took some advice from an unlikely source in James Bond’s Sean Connery.
“I got really nervous and kept thinking, ‘What am I going to do, how do I behave?’ And I was watching TV one day and Inside the actor’s studio it was on and Sean Connery was in it and it has a lot of sex scenes,” Rogen said according to Contact Music. “He was talking about sex scenes and he said, ‘Before every sex scene, I tell the woman, ‘I’m sorry if I get turned on and I’m sorry if I don’t.’ I thought, ‘That’s good, I’ll use it.’”
Unfortunately, when the time came, Rogen found that what worked for Connery wouldn’t work for him. At least when it came to Heigl.
“So, we’re shooting the scene and we’re positioning ourselves,” he continued. “I’m really focusing on not breaking a sweat with her, that’s my main goal. I tell her, ‘Katherine, I’m sorry if I get turned on and I’m sorry if I don’t.’ And she looks at me and says, ‘Why are you going to regret it if you don’t get turned on? I don’t want you to get excited.’”
It was a lesson about him and Connery that he believed he had been taught the hard way.
“I realized that that’s the difference between me and Sean Connery: People want to get him a little excited. I should have said, ‘I’m sorry.’ And that’s it,” he added.
Seth Rogen believed that sex scenes are easier when they are fun.
Even after several years of being in the industry, Rogen shared that he still had trouble doing sex scenes. But weird and nerdy alum found that when comedy was implemented into more intimate shots it helped ease his concerns.
“It’s always easier to do a sex scene when it’s fun,” Rogen told the Associated Press. “Like, if there’s a joke, it’s like, it actually takes away a lot of what I find very uncomfortable about the sex scenes. Because it is something else. Obviously the chemistry and the romance and all of that has to be a part of it, but there’s also a joke that you’re trying to pull off. So it allows you to focus on that.”
