Former employee Manchester City sentenced to 18 months in prison for embezzling from the club treasury.
The verdict was announced at a court hearing on Monday, in which 33-year-old Scotsman Fiona Barclay pleaded guilty. The former Manchester City employee, who is currently expecting a child, will spend half of his term in custody.
Barclay worked at Manchester City as a business development manager. Last March, after a suspicious £25,000 transaction was uncovered in the club’s accounts department, she was sacked by the club following an internal investigation. Further investigations showed that money had been withdrawn from the club’s coffers since 2019.
In total, Barclay withdrew £104,000 from the club’s treasury, of which £15,000, by his own admission, went back to the club. According to her, she used the money she received to pay for her wedding and also bought gifts for her husband and her family.
