Press release from the LFI-NUPES parliamentary group
In a press release on Wednesday July 12, the Prefecture of Mayotte announced an intensification of water cuts. From Monday July 17, the municipalities of Mamoudzou, Koungou, Pamandzi and Dzaoudzi will suffer seven “night” cuts per week, from 4 p.m. to 8 a.m. Thirteen other cities in the department will have to deal with “three water towers” 24 hours a week.
After the failure of the security and anti-poor operation “Wuambushu”, the government is bogged down in indifference towards our fellow citizens of Mayotte, who bear the brunt of its inaction.
For several years we have been alerting and have tabled a bill, swept away by Macronie, in order to guarantee the free use of 50 liters of water per day and per person, which corresponds to the vital minimum recommended by the WHO.
In Mayotte, a third of families do not have access to running water. Connection rates to the sanitation network are very low: while 37% of the population lives in areas served by the network, only 18% of households are connected to it.
The state cannot deprive part of the population of access to water. We are asking for an “Emergency Water Plan” for Mayotte and its discussion in the National Assembly.
