Liputan6.com, Jakarta – The Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemenkes RI) predicts an explosion in cases of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever or DBD occurring at the end of 2023 and early 2024. This prediction also looks at the connection with the El Nino phenomenon which brings heat to land.
The prediction for the incidence of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever was conveyed by the Director General of Disease Prevention and Control of the Indonesian Ministry of Health, Maxi Rein Rondonuwu, at the launch of the #Ayo3MplusVaksinDBD campaign.
Moreover, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) estimates that the El Nino phenomenon will trigger extreme hot weather in Indonesia. The peak will be in the period August to October 2023 and will continue until early 2024.
“We’re just around the corner, according to the BMKG, the peak heat will be in October, then October-November will start to rain and the case is, if you look at the height it will be at the end of the year,” said Maxi at the Raffles Hotel Jakarta on Wednesday, September 27 2023.
“So it is possible that we will see an increase in cases (of dengue fever) that will explode at the end and beginning of the year. We are actually alert there. We have issued circular letters twice regarding vigilance against dengue fever and Extraordinary Extraordinary Events) in the regions.”
El Nino influence
In the last 10 years, continued Maxi, the Ministry of Health has seen the influence of El Nino not only on dengue fever, but also other tropical diseases.
“This (El Nino) really has a very high correlation. So the temperature rises, then the wind affects the speed of mosquitoes, then there is humidity, there is rainfall, I think it will definitely influence it,” he said.
