Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Elon Musk has a new competitor in developing chip implant technology in the brain. Startup Precision Neuroscience will build key components of brain implants with Layer 7 Cortical Interface technology.
Development took place at a factory in Dallas that had been acquired by the company. The factory is said to be able to produce advanced electrode arrays.
This facility will help speed up development and regulatory approval in 2024, quoted from CNBC InternationalFriday (6/10/2023).
Precision has also begun testing brain implants in human patients. The chip is expected to help those suffering from paralysis.
Precision has been using this facility since last May. CNBC International reports this makes a big difference to the company’s supply levels.
Previously, CEO and co-founder, Michael Mager, said that his company’s facilities were only capable of building 6 data structures, which took 1 year. But now it can produce more than 100 data structures in one week.
The electrodes that Precision developed are thinner than a human hair. CNBC International noted that the system is designed to be flexible so that it can be placed on the surface of the human brain.
The chip is also designed with high-resolution neural activity in real-time. That way, it is hoped that the device will not damage any network.
Neuralink, a company owned by Elon Musk, also has close ties with Precision. Neuralink helped develop human brain interface (BCI) technology with Precision together with other companies, namely Synchron, Paradromics, and Blackrock Neurotech.
Additionally Precision co-founder and chief science officer Benjamin Rapoport helped found Neuralink. However, he finally left the company in 2018.
