Prarond in America: Adeline and Ernest Prarond’s Journey to the United States, 1863

EXHIBITION November 16, 2021 – February 19, 2022

Historian, poet – friend of Baudelaire -, Latinist, tireless researcher, Ernest Prarond (1821-1909) who was also mayor of Abbeville and general councilor, was also a great traveler.
On the occasion of the bicentenary of his birth, the Abbeville Archives and Heritage Library present an exhibition on the trip made by Prarond and his wife Adeline to the United States and Canada from October to December 1863. This journey led them from large cities in the northeast of the United States to Saint-Louis via Quebec and Montreal.
While Ernest Prarond drew from this trip the notes and impressions for his future collection of poems entitled From Montreal to Jerusalem (Paris, Lévy frères, 1869), Adeline meticulously recorded in a notebook the snapshot of their common adventure: their crossing since Liverpool on the Scotia liner, the large and small towns discovered, the evenings, the railway, the landscapes, etc.
It is this crossed vision that we invite you to discover through the manuscripts of Ernest and Adeline and the iconographic documents and books brought back from their trip.
