Good grades, especially for the Mümlingtal cycle path, the desire to connect municipalities even better to the cycle path network, suggestions for safe parking facilities and additional cycle paths – these are some of the results of the online survey on the cycle path traffic concept commissioned by the district. 1,028 people took part in the survey.
District Administrator Frank Matiaske thanked them for the active participation. “Many citizens already use their bikes on a daily basis. The number is steadily increasing, especially with e-bikes. The valuable information from the survey will now be incorporated into further considerations. ”The concept should be completed by spring 2022 and then be implemented in cooperation with the municipalities. Andrea Kaufmann from the road traffic authority and the climate protection manager Markus Linkenheil are in charge of the district administration.
Cooperation partner is the company R + T Verkehrsplanung GmbH (Darmstadt), which also carried out and evaluated the survey. The aim is to make cycling in the Odenwaldkreis more attractive and safer. In the course of the conception, it should also be explored whether the construction of new cycle paths to connect municipalities is technically possible and, if so, whether it can be financially secured.
Overall, in the opinion of the survey participants, a lot needs to be done for a better cycling infrastructure in the Odenwaldkreis. “The separation from flowing car traffic and the provision of easily usable bicycle traffic facilities between the municipalities play an important role”, explains Dominik Könighaus, the head of the planning office. But there has also been a lot of positive feedback, especially about the Mümlingtal cycle path between Höchst and Erbach, as well as other routes in the district.
Citizens especially want more secure parking facilities in the inner cities of Erbach, Michelstadt, Höchst and Bad König, especially at everyday cycling destinations. The existing parking facilities along the Odenwaldbahn are also seen as inadequate, in particular for higher-quality bicycles there is a desire for lockable bicycle boxes, so the conclusion.
From the many requests for additional cycle paths, the planning office has identified 15 routes and wants to include them in further tests – routes that fit the objective of the concept of “establishing a basic main route network that connects the most important destinations and bundles cycle traffic on these routes “, As Könighaus describes. Existing cycle paths are also subjected to the test in order to arrive at an overall concept at the end of the day.
