After almost being relegated: Lots of praise for Degen: That’s how much money FCB received this summer
After a disastrous last season, FC Basel can score points with a successful transfer strategy. The club earned over 54 million francs this summer.

FC Basel earned around 54.3 million francs from player sales this summer, including 14.5 million for Thierno Barry and 14 million for Renato Veiga.
-
Part of the proceeds were invested in new players, including Kevin Carlos and Bénie Traoré, and Xherdan Shaqiri returned to the club on a free transfer.

Sports director Daniel Stucki and boss David Degen are praised by fans as FC Basel is in a strong financial position despite a difficult last season.
FC Basel is swimming in millions. FCB received around 14.5 million francs for Thierno Barry and 14 for Renato Veiga. FC Basel also received money for Riccardo Calafiori. This is because the Basel team secured a share of the resale in the summer of 2023.
According to the “BZ Basel”, around 17.8 million Swiss francs changed hands for the young Italian, who went from Bologna to Arsenal. In addition, there were smaller million-euro contributions such as for Nasser Djiga (3 million), Liam Millar (3 million) and Sayfallah Ltaief (1.5 million). In total, FCB collected around 54.3 million Swiss francs this summer.
FC Basel invested in players
That’s a huge sum! Especially when you consider that last season was catastrophic. Internationally, the club failed in the first qualifying round, FC Basel only narrowly avoided relegation and in the current season, FCB must survive without participating in the European Cup for the first time in 25 years.
And yet, Red and Blue managed to sell players for so many millions. For comparison: According to Transfermarkt, the rest of the league has a total of just over eleven million Swiss francs in transfer revenue.

The FCB bosses immediately invested some of the millions back into the squad. Kevin Carlos, last season’s top scorer, was signed by Rotblau from Yverdon (transfer fee around 3.4 million francs), Bénie Traoré came from Sheffield United (4.5 million). And then, of course, FCB pulled off a mega coup: after twelve years, the prodigal son Xherdan Shaqiri returned home to the Joggeli – free of charge! According to reports, however, he will receive an annual salary of around 1.7 million francs.
Much praise for sports director Daniel Stucki
What is striking: In the last transfer phases, the frequent comings and goings in the Basel squad were sharply criticized. This year, not at all. And there was also a major sell-off this summer. 16 (!) players left the club. Some, like Barry and Veiga, permanently, others on loan (Andrin Hunziker or Adriano Onyegbule), and the contract of former national team defender Michael Lang was terminated. He keeps himself fit in his private life.

The FCB fans are happy. Not only because the Basel team is swimming in millions thanks to a top transfer strategy, but also because they are generally satisfied with the arrivals and departures. Sporting director Daniel Stucki, who has only been in office since early summer, is receiving a lot of praise.
On X, for example, one fan says: “Great work from the new sports director Stucki. On paper, one of the strongest offenses in the league. If things go well in sporting terms, then FCB can attack upwards.” Someone else writes in Basel German: “Stucki is doing a great job! I rarely enjoy the transfers so much.”
Probably representing many FCB fans, one supporter on X said: “What David Degen is delivering this summer is absolutely world class.”

“What Degen delivers is absolutely world class”
Peace, joy and happiness at the Rhine knee. And yet things looked quite bleak in the spring. As a reminder: FCB bosses around David Degen admitted that they had put money into the club through a previously unknown company.
In 2021, three million francs flowed into the club via Horizon2026 via Holding. In recent weeks, another eight million were injected as a loan – all hidden. It was also announced that FC Basel would have gone bankrupt at the end of 2021 if the millions had not been contributed.
It also became public that, contrary to earlier statements, Degen does receive a salary from FC Basel. According to the Basler Zeitung, he is to receive a fixed salary of 300,000 francs. The annual general meeting of FC Basel was then eagerly awaited. At this meeting, Degen lost a lot of trust, but was vindicated.
An unpleasant time that is now long forgotten. Probably speaking for many FCB fans, one supporter on X said: “What David Degen is delivering this summer is absolutely world class.”
