The Italian fashion brand Prada will design spacesuits for NASA astronauts who will go to the moon in 2025. The company is working with the American space company Axiom Space for this.
Prada and Axiom work together throughout the design process to make the suits suitable for the conditions in space and on the moon, they said in a joint statement. Axiom chose Prada as a partner because the fashion brand is innovative and has expertise in the field of production techniques, among other things.
The space suits that NASA astronauts wear on the International Space Station need to be replaced. For example, there have been incidents of water accumulating in helmets.
Last year, NASA announced that it would have new spacesuits developed. Axiom Space is one of the companies to which the American space agency awarded the contract. The development of new spacesuits had been planned for some time, but was plagued by delays and other problems.
The NASA astronauts for whom the suits are intended will go to the moon on the Artemis III mission. It is the first mission in which humans have to set foot on the moon again since this last happened fifty years ago.
