It’s been about a year since, after one article about the “classic” Mercedes W124 series, I vowed never to write anything about this model again. That, in short, it was enough, that I and my colleagues were already alone we keep repeating the phrases about quality workmanship, longevity and durability slowly, but it has certainly become a cliché. Or is there anyone else here who doesn’t know why this model was so important to Mercedes? It’s not, you see. But then I come across one truly interesting ad and “I’m at it again”. Let’s look at that cat in the station wagon together.
Practicality and style in an exceptional symbiosis
And at the outset, I can add right away that a lot of those “cats” could fit in this particular piece. Yes, of course, “Tee”. Model T. Station wagon. A super compact body, maybe slightly detracting from the style, but adding even more to the practicality soon became popular among those who still wanted the comfort, durability and driving characteristics of a Mercedes, but for whatever reason the standard sedan body was not enough for them. The success that the T-Modell W124 “befell” only confirmed that Mercedes was not really wrong in estimating the interest of customers.
Mountain bike? Crates with tomatoes? Surf float? Ski? Or just “two more children”, i.e. a seven-seater version with smaller seats facing the direction of travel? There was a “full stop” to all of that ideal for a middle class Mercedes. True, somewhat boxy appearance it did not reach the parameters of a supremely elegant sedan, but inside you may not care and you will even appreciate it when loading things into the almost bottomless trunk. And that the neighbor will sneer that “the station wagon is not a Mercedes”? So don’t listen to him.
The T-Modell from the W124 series is every inch a Mercedes
Because the W124 series is perhaps one of the most Mercedes that ever left the gates of the car factory in Stuttgart. And station wagons belong to this series quite naturally. In addition, it had a station wagon against the sedan some “goodies” that you could only get with a two-seater bodywork: if I ignore the really huge luggage compartment (530 liters, after folding 1,770 liters) it was, for example, the third row of seats or the pneumatic maintenance of ground clearance. Maybe you were once interested in diesel engines, especially the completely durable OM 602 series, which really lasted forever under the hood of Mercedes. And they didn’t want much for their work. But that was it current at a time when the middle class W124 served tirelessly today and daily to their owners. And even if she could do it without hesitation even today, most people buy 30-year-old or more cars for pleasure, as youngtimers, for a sunny weekend and a trip with their partner “back to the old days”.
The petrol 180 hp might be enough
And in that case, you won’t mind the extra few liters of gasoline in exchange for the highly refined expression of the inline six-cylinder. And just the “inline six” with a volume of three liters, with power quite sufficient 180 horses and complemented by a manual five-speed gearbox you will find in the advertised “dot” in a color evoking midnight blue. Despite the considerable mileage exceeding 340,000 kilometers, at first and second glance, the “E” is in perfect condition, it doesn’t even have the typical wear on the side of the driver’s seat, which can otherwise be found in significantly less used models.

Uncurled, preserved, with a future ahead
Or significantly more curled models. Because turning the speedometer is something like a transnational sport with this model. With regard to its absurd durability, no one with preserved pieces He does not know 100-200 thousand kilometers “down”. And you wouldn’t recognize them here either. The blue interior suits the given bodywork, the air conditioning makes it capable of daily operation. And something else. An extensive list of repairs and replaced parts for a brother for 45 thousand crowns. In other words, at a total price of roughly 115,000, the owner has freshly “crammed” parts into it for his brother’s half.
