Practical test: Panasonic GH7 – film-tv-video.de

Innovations in the video functions, such as a finally usable autofocus, improve the already very professional video functions of the previous models of the Panasonic GH7. Our test reveals what the new camera can do.

Panasonic presents the Micro FourThirds camera Lumix GH7.

ProRes Raw, better 2-phase autofocus, better stabilization and a new audio module with 32-bit float recording are probably the key points that have everyone paying attention.

Before we take a closer look at these functions, here are the facts: The new GH7 costs 2,199 euros, and in a kit with the 12-60mm lens it is available for 2,399 euros. If you opt for the faster Leica 12-60 (clearly recommended for MFT), you will pay 2,799 euros. But be careful, the aperture 2.8 only refers to the other focal lengths (from 24mm converted to KB), if you zoom in all the way (converted to 120mm), you end up with an aperture of f4.

In the test we had the Leica lens, as well as the new Panasonic DMW-XLR2 audio adapter, which costs 549 euros. With this revised version of the predecessor, 32-bit float audio can now be recorded in the camera.

In terms of the outside and the menu, you will not notice any difference between the GH7 and its predecessor, the GH6; what is new here is the inner values.

Like the GH6, the new GH7 has a fan and therefore promises no overheating.

©Sas Kaykhafilm-tv-video.de tested the Leica lens.

The well-known dynamic boost of the GH6, which had to be activated on the GH6, is permanently active on the new model. The sensor has a resolution of 25.2 megapixels.

The camera offers the following base ISO values:
For Rec709, 100 ISO applies.
For V-Log the base ISO is 500 up to 60P, and 250 from 61P.
If you use HLG, the base ISO is 250.

©Sas KaykhaPanasonic specifies a dynamic range of 13+ f-stops for the camera.

Like its predecessors, the GH7 has an incredibly large number of possible recording formats, and now even more have been added with ProRes and ProRes Raw. Fortunately, you can sort these and only display your “favorite formats”.

In addition to our normal test video, I created a second one that goes through all the formats in the menu.
