Jakarta –
Prabowo Subianto certainly will compete in the 2024 presidential election. Prabowo has twice run as a presidential candidate and is now the Minister of Defense.
His political career in the national arena began when Prabowo became the running mate for Megawati Sukarnoputri in 2009.
At that time, the Megawati-Prabowo duo lost badly to the incumbent, SBY-Boediono. The 2009 presidential election was only one round.
At that time, SBY-Boediono received 73,874,562 (60.80%) votes, far behind Megawati-Prabowo, who won 32,548,105 (26.79%) votes and JK-Wiranto 15,081,814 (12.41%). SBY-Boediono was later determined to be the winner.
Run as Presidential Candidate 2014
After breaking up the partnership with Megawati, in the 2014 presidential election, Prabowo paired up with Hatta Rajasa, who was then the chairman of PAN. Prabowo-Hatta was promoted by Gerindra, PAN, PPP, PKS, Golkar, and the United Nations.
A hot battle took place between Prabowo-Hatta and Jokowi, who was paired with Jusuf Kalla (JK). However, Prabowo failed to become president with 62.576444 votes or 46.85 percent. Meanwhile, Jokowi received 70,997,833 votes or 53.15 percent.
In suing the 2014 presidential election results to the Constitutional Court (MK), Prabowo was still declared defeated. Finally, the Gerindra chairman acknowledged Jokowi’s victory and congratulated him chivalically.
Although relations with Jokowi improved after the 2014 presidential election, Prabowo decided that Gerindra would remain outside the government cabinet. As an opposition, Gerindra is a party that is quite critical of the Jokowi-JK government.
