Headline: Prabowo’s Government Plans 500,000 Hectares of New Paddy Fields in Kalimantan
In a bold move to bolster Indonesia’s food security, Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman announced on November 4, 2024, that the government led by Prabowo Subianto is set to establish new paddy fields across 500,000 hectares in South Kalimantan. This initiative aims to achieve food self-sufficiency within five years and is seen as a significant step towards addressing the country’s agricultural needs.
A Vision for Food Security
During a press conference in Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan, Minister Amran emphasized the importance of this project, stating, "Today, we have mapped out 500,000 hectares of land for the paddy fields. Achieving this will strengthen our food security." The initiative reflects the government’s commitment to sustainable agriculture while employing modern technology to enhance productivity and efficiency.
Phased Approach to Development
The government’s strategy involves a methodical, phased approach. The first phase targets 152,291 hectares, spanning five regencies: South Hulu Sungai, Central Hulu Sungai, North Hulu Sungai, Tanah Laut, and Tapin. Over time, the project will expand to other regions in South Kalimantan, following a structured development plan.
Technological Integration
One of the key components of this rice field initiative is the integration of technology across the agricultural process—from land preparation to planting, harvesting, and post-harvesting. "Technology will play a critical role in maximizing the output of these paddy fields," Amran noted.
To support this ambitious project, the Ministry of Agriculture has partnered with 14 companies that have committed to providing agricultural equipment and machinery. To date, a total of 2,000 units of equipment are set to be delivered to facilitate the rice field development.
Engaging the Younger Generation
Recognizing the importance of involving the younger population in agricultural practices, the government is implementing a "Food Brigade" program, managed by the Agency for Agricultural Human Resources Development (BPPSDMP). This program will see every 200 hectares of land managed by a team of 15 individuals equipped with technological tools, effectively blending youth involvement with modern agricultural practices.
Collaboration Across Multiple Sectors
To ensure the successful execution of the paddy field project, the Ministry has cemented partnerships with various stakeholders, including the South Kalimantan Provincial Government, district and city governments, the Regional Military Command, Regional Police, and Pupuk Indonesia. Amran emphasized that effective collaboration among these entities is vital for the program’s success.
Broader Agricultural Goals
This extensive rice field project is not confined to South Kalimantan alone. The Prabowo-led government is also initiating similar agricultural development projects in areas like Merauke and Central Kalimantan, expanding the nation’s agricultural reach and capacity.
Impact on Agriculture and Technology
The implications of this project extend beyond mere agriculture; it also presents a substantial opportunity for technological advancement in Indonesia’s farming sector. Integrating modern farming practices with new technology not only enhances food production but also prepares the industry for future challenges posed by climate change and food security pressures.
