Minister of Defense and presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto said that his party was committed to encouraging the production of defense equipment made in Indonesia, including jeep vehicles. Prabowo revealed that Indonesia would build a domestic engine factory for the first time in history.
“As Minister of Defense, following instructions from the president, now I am making a jeep made in Indonesia. I admit that it cannot compete economically,” said Prabowo at the Workshop of 100 Indonesian economists at Menara Mega, Mampang, South Jakarta, Wednesday (8/11/2023 ).
Prabowo said that he had faced a difficult choice between buying a jeep made in another country at an economical price or making a domestic jeep at a higher cost. Prabowo said he had decided to make a contract to manufacture jeeps domestically.
“I was faced with having to choose, here is a jeep made in another country that costs 20 thousand dollars, the one we made ourselves costs 59 thousand dollars. If you count on business, just buy it for 20 thousand, but this doesn’t encourage nation building, doesn’t encourage Indonesia to stand on its own two feet. “So I made a decision, made it, gave a contract for 60 thousand dollars,” said Prabowo.
The General Chair of Gerindra then emphasized that he would continue to make Indonesia a large producing country. He said RI might build a machine factory for the first time.
“And maybe next year we will create, for the first time in Indonesian history, a machine factory in Indonesia. I think that is it,” he said.
