Pallikara Asian Games medalist PR Sreejesh’s stadium in Pallikara of Kunnathunad panchayat. The indoor stadium announced in PR Sreejesh’s home country as a tribute to his gold medal at the 2014 Asian Games is nothing but iron pillars. After the Asian Games on that day, Thiruvanjoor Radhakrishnan, who was the sports minister, announced that the stadium would be built at the reception organized by the Kunnathunad panchayat. The project was to be completed at Pallikkara at a cost of Rs 98.50 lakh. The work was halted midway when some people filed a complaint alleging defects in the construction. The panchayat did not pay the money even though it was clear from the high-level investigations that there were no irregularities. With this, the contractor approached the High Court demanding the first installment of the construction cost. The court ordered the payment but it was not paid. When the panchayat refused, a case was filed for contempt of court. Finally Panchayat Tadiyuri paid the first installment. The contractor had purchased all the materials required for the construction in advance. After receiving the first installment of the contract amount, the work was ready to be completed. However, due to the indifference of the panchayat authorities, the construction contract had to be canceled by the court. The contractor, who lost Rs.6 lakh and the cost of the case, is preparing to approach the court again. Meanwhile, in the Janasabha led by PV Srinijin MLA, Rs 25 lakh was sanctioned to complete the construction of the stadium. The information was informed in writing to the Twenty-20 governing panchayat but no favorable decision was taken. The MLA said that the amount will be paid once the procedures are completed.
