AMD Director Lisa Su presented a new line of Ryzen 5000 Mobile mobile processors at CES 2021 as part of a virtual keynote. It has thirteen models, ten of which are built on the new Zen 3 architecture and three on last year’s Zen 2. During the presentation, not a word was said about the graphics part of the new processors, most likely Vega is identical to the previous generation Ryzen 4000 and RDNA2 graphics cores so far did not happen.
The offer is again divided into H-series processors – for powerful work and gaming notebooks – and U-series processors for ultraportable notebooks for less powerful work, study and, say, “normal home” use. And to make it a little more complicated, each “H” processor can be in the “HS” variant with 35W TDP and the rougher “HX” variant with 45W TDP or higher, depending on how much the laptop manufacturer overclockes them (what it can cool).
The “hook” processors Ryzen 9 and Ryzen 7 are eight-core (ie 16 fibers), with a fundamental frequency between 2,800 and 3,300 MHz, in the “boost” mode 4,400 – 4,800 MHz. Ryzens 5 are then six cores with frequencies of 3,000 MHz – 4,200 MHz.
There are only two “performance” processors with Zen 3 architecture. Ryzen 7 has eight cores and is clocked at 1.9 – 4.4 GHz, Ryzen 5 has six cores and 2.3 – 4.2 GHz. Both have a 15 W TDP. With the older Zen 2 architecture, there are three models on offer: the eight-core Ryzen 7, the six-core Ryzen 5 and the four-core Ryzen 3, all with a TDP of 16 W.
There is at least one fairly fundamental difference between Zen 3 and Zen 2 processors – those in Zen 3 have 19 – 20 MB of cache available, while Zen 2 has only 8 and 6 MB, respectively.
The manufacturer confidently claims that the fastest processors for gaming laptops will be the Ryzen 5000 Mobile. He claimed the same thing at the end of the year about the desktop Ryzen 5000, and at least until this year’s introduction of new Intel chips, this is the case.
The gaming area is extremely important for AMD, the gaming industry is larger in terms of profits than the film and music industry combined. AMD has a strong position in it also because its chips are powered by both PlayStation and XBox game consoles.
In the first half of 2021, the mobile graphics chip of the new RDNA 2 architecture should be introduced, on which the series of desktop GPUs RX 6800 and RX 6900 XT is built at the end of the year.
