Powerful Storms Devastate New York State, Trigger State of Emergency

On Sunday, New York State suffered powerful storms, turning the streets into torrents that washed away bridges. More than 12,000 people were deprived of electricity and a woman died while leaving her house. Governor Kathy Hochul has declared a state of emergency.

An emergency was announced for Orange County, northwest of New York City, and Ontario County, in central New York. The governor noted that up to 200mm of rain had fallen, creating “life-threatening conditions due to flash flooding”.

The rains washed away roads and trapped people in their cars or homes. Highways have been closed in at least five counties across the state, including Westchester, which sits just north of New York and borders the Hudson River.

More storms are expected on Monday, according to the governor’s office.
