The powerful Hurricane Idalia hit the coast of Florida on Wednesday morning, in the midst of a series of unusual warnings and historic records. The impact was recorded in the Big Bend, a predominantly rural area that suffered “significant damage,” according to the state’s governor, Ron DeSantis.
A preliminary report from Moody’s Analytics puts the losses from damages and reduced production due to Idalia at between 12,000 and 20,000 million dollars.
In addition, US Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell appeared briefly paralyzed and was unable to answer a reporter’s question at an event in Kentucky on Wednesday, weeks after suffering a similar episode in Washington.
These are the videos that marked the week:
1.- The unusual and devastating passage of Hurricane Idalia
Hurricane Idalia battered Florida on Wednesday with the force of a speeding 125-mph train, ripping trees in half, ripping hotel roofs off and turning small cars into boats before hitting Georgia and South Carolina as a severe storm that flooded roads and forced residents to move to higher ground.
In the days before, Florida feared the worst as it continued to recover from last year’s Hurricane Ian, which battered the heavily populated Fort Myers area, killing 149 people in the state.
Although the Idalia Passage caused only 3 deaths, it was the first major hurricane, Category 3 or stronger, to pass through Florida’s Apalachee Bay. In addition, the storm surge that it caused broke records in various parts where it passed.

2.- Mitch McConnell paralyzes again in front of the cameras
As happened a little over a month ago at an event in Washington DC, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell had a new bout of paralysis when he was unable to answer questions from reporters.
When asked in Kentucky on Wednesday about his plans to run for re-election in 2026, the legislator asked him to repeat the question and later, after the reporter clarified, he froze, staring straight ahead, for about 30 seconds.
