Previously, the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev instructed the government to stop cooperation with the ArcelorMittal Temirtau company, at whose mine the accident occurred. He also expressed condolences to the families of the victims. A special commission has been created to clarify the circumstances of the accident.

Note! Tokayev declared October 29 a day of mourning for the victims of the Karaganda mine accident.

It is noted that the Prosecutor General’s Office has already begun a pre-trial investigation under the article on violation of safety rules during mining construction work. An interdepartmental investigative and operational group was also created under the leadership of special prosecutors, which included the most experienced law enforcement officers and Emergencies Ministry specialists.

Later it became known that in Kazakhstan there was a methane explosion in the mine, reported the press service of ArcelorMittal Temirtau JSC.

In company confirmed Government reports that both sides have been in discussions over the future of ArcelorMittal Temirtau and recently signed a preliminary agreement that will transfer ownership to Kazakhstan.

The company noted that it strives to complete this transaction as quickly as possible in order to minimize disruptions.

“Both parties are very focused on an outcome that benefits the people who work in the steel mill, iron ore and coal mines, and the communities that support the operations,” the statement said.

They also added that several months ago they entered into negotiations on transferring ownership of ArcelorMittal Temirtau back to the government, and last week before this accident a preliminary agreement was signed. By the way, ArcelorMittal has owned mines in Kazakhstan since 1995.
