Turkish state operator Botaş said it cut off the flow of oil through the Kirkuk-Ceyhan oil pipeline after an explosion near the southeastern province of Kahramanmarash.
Botaş’s statement also said that a fire broke out after the explosion and firefighters and emergency personnel were deployed to put out the fire.
The cause of the explosion, which occurred at the 511th kilometer of the pipeline, is still unknown.
The mayor of Kahramanmarash, Khairettin Gungor, said that the explosion in the Pazardzhik district of Kahramanmarash province did not result in casualties.
The governor of the province, Omer Faruk Coskun, said the fire did not affect residential areas near the explosion zone.
As noted, the Kirkuk-Ceyhan oil pipeline has previously been subjected to terrorist attacks by terrorists of the Islamic State and members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party.
As a result of an IS attack in 2014, the Iraqi side of the pipeline was closed.
At the end of September 2021, the Iraqi Oil Ministry announced that Iraq and Turkey were going to reopen a 970-kilometer pipeline that transports Iraqi oil from Kirkuk to export facilities in Ceyhan on the Mediterranean coast.
It is Iraq’s largest crude oil export line.
