“At least 30 people died as a result of a powerful earthquake that struck the Noto Peninsula and surrounding areas in central Japan on New Year’s Eve,” the publication reported.
As noted, on Tuesday there were reports of places of new destruction, where rescue services were promptly dispatched.
“The 7.6 magnitude earthquake caused significant structural damage and fires in the city of Wajima in Ishikawa Prefecture. Prolonged aftershocks and blockages on roads hampered rescue operations,” the report said.
As city authorities noted, seven Wajima residents died in the hospital, and another 14 were trapped under the rubble. More than 200 houses are also known to have caught fire.
In addition, the earthquake caused significant damage in Niigata, Toyama, Fukui and Gifu prefectures. So far, it is known that about 1,000 members of the Self-Defense Forces are taking part in rescue operations.
Difficulty moving
Great difficulties also arose in the country’s transport industry. Japanese authorities say that traffic in the direction of the city of Noto (the epicenter of the earthquake) is difficult.
About 1,400 bullet train passengers were stranded for about 11 hours, according to West Japan Railway Co. It is noted that the company stopped the movement of four trains on the line to check the tracks and other objects after the earthquake.
What preceded
According to Sky News, more than 100 earthquakes were recorded in Japan on January 1. As the publication notes, the Tokyo Meteorological Agency counted more than a hundred tremors with a magnitude of 2.9 to 7.6 on the island.
At night it became known that after the earthquake more than 50 tremors occurred. Tens of thousands of Japanese were evacuated.
US President Joe Biden has already said that his country is ready to help those affected by the earthquake in Japan.
