General scheme of a power plant with Hofim heat pumps and compressor, for heating a neighborhood, city, or large factory
The new plant will start construction next summer and will be ready in 2027. It will operate for one year alongside the coal plant, after which the city will completely get rid of fossil sources in its heating system. MAN does not announce the COP, i.e. the coefficient of productivity for the new plant, but if we were to take an average of 4.0 per for home heat pumps, it means that for 550,000 MWh of heat supplied in the season, about 137.5 GWh of electricity. We believe that the true coefficient, due to centralization, can be around 5.0-5.5, and then 100 GWh of electricity consumption will be obtained. A single top-of-the-line offshore wind turbine, of the type used in Denmark, can produce around 60-85 GWh of electricity annually. So, even with a lower efficiency and some wind turbines that are not at the top, only a few wind turbines, between 2 and 3, can provide the energy needed to heat a city through district heat pumps! Even if the city is bigger, or lacks any other source, 4-5 offshore wind turbines solve the problem of a bigger city. And, in fact, if the maximum cumulative power of the pumps in the plant is 132 MW, the heat pumps will normally operate at about 30-45 MW of power consumed in real time, after the system is already warm, and at about 15- 16 MW delivered by a wind turbine in the network, the same equation of the small number of turbines needed, for a city to heat without natural gas, without coal, only with electricity produced with zero CO2, is reconfirmed.
