– The most dangerous thing in a democracy is that people like me keep quiet to “please” a government, says Gerd-Liv Valla.
The former powerful LO leader and AP top, has turned 74 and got a new job. She is now a member of the Alternative Energy Commission. There is a commission that will find good solutions to the energy crisis. More than 50 trade unions are behind the initiative. Several high-profile politicians, researchers and shop stewards from the trade union movement have agreed to sit on the commission, writes Nationen.
While electricity prices have skyrocketed and there is a risk of electricity rationing for the winter, the government has shown little will to regulate the market. Among other things has The Center Party’s parliamentary group went against its own government, and demanded a halt in electricity exports.

Jonas Gahr Støre has spoken Aftenposten that he does not think Norway is benefited by cutting cables and canceling power agreements with the EU. Valla believes that Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre is afraid of stepping on the EU’s toes.
– After all, Støre is one of the warmest EU supporters we have in this country. It may seem as if you are a little afraid of stepping on the EU’s toes, but we must not be, she says to nations.
– We cannot export our roads or our healthcare system to show solidarity. We need electricity to maintain jobs and a livable life. Should Norway be a battery for Europe at the expense of ourselves? No, we won’t, she asserts.

Valla was state secretary for Gro Harlem Brundtland, and minister of justice in Torbjørn Jagland’s government. Until 2007, she was LO leader. In 2006, VG named her Norway’s most powerful person.
Valla believes, like several opposition parties in the Storting, that the government cannot wait until the autumn’s consideration of the state budget to consider measures to secure electricity in Norway.
– Do something quickly about the energy crisis. Enter into negotiations with the EU about exports and ensure that the power producers take account of the degree of filling. These are immediate measures, you don’t have to wait until December, replies Valla.
