KAMPALA, UGANDA – The U.S. government’s Power Africa initiative supported the launch of an industry position paper on Uganda’s electric mobility sector. The paper, funded by Power Africa, outlines market trends, policy frameworks, challenges, and opportunities for electric mobility in Uganda, offering recommendations for government, private sector, and development partners to advance the industry. Electric mobility is the use of electric-powered vehicles for transportation, reducing the use of fossil fuels for transport.
“Electric mobility can transform Uganda’s transport sector by improving health, reducing fossil fuel dependency, and driving economic growth,” said Richard Nelson, Power Africa Coordinator in support of the position paper.
The event also marked the official launch of the Uganda Electric Mobility Association (UEMA)an industry association that promotes collaboration among its members and supports Uganda’s vision to transition to e-mobility by 2040. UEMA, with over 25 members, is part of the Africa E-Mobility Alliance (AfEMA), and has received advisory support from Power Africa since its inception in 2022.
“By bringing together key players in the sector, we are positioning Uganda to not only reduce its carbon footprint and fossil fuel dependency but also to create jobs, boost local industry, and lead the region in the adoption of electric mobility,” said Mr. Jakob Hornbach, CEO, Gogo Electric Transport Company and UEMA founding member.
Uganda is working to address climate change and reduce air pollution in its cities. A transition to electric mobility presents an opportunity for a cleaner and more sustainable future through reduced greenhouse gas emissions, improved air quality, and decreased reliance on fossil fuels.
