“It will be very tight. The people of Potsdam are no longer the young, wild ones. You have gained a year of experience in the second division and have stabilized yourself. “This is a really top team,” says TuS coach Michael Haaß, expressing his respect. Most recently, Potsdam won three league games in a row.
But the self-confidence at TuS N-Lübbecke is also high after the cup win against Balingen-Weilstetten and the 29:21 against HC Elbflorenz Dresden. Now it depends on how the team deals with it so as not to experience a similar slump as after the good start to the season in the blackout against the Eulen Ludwigshafen and at TuSEM Essen. Michael Haaß relies on the learning effect from this phase: “I now find the teams very grounded in training. Euphoria alone won’t get us anywhere.”
With today’s opponent, a lot depends on Max Beneke, who is only 20 years old. The left-hander scored 203 goals for Potsdam last season and became U21 world champion in the summer. Beneke has a double game right for Potsdam and Bundesliga club Füchse Berlin, who played against the Rhein-Neckar Löwen on Thursday evening. Therefore, it remains to be seen whether Beneke will be there tonight.
Three U21 world champions in the squad
With Lasse Ludwig and Moritz Sauter, there are two other U21 world champions in the 1. VfL squad, whose team has great potential. “They have a lot of players whose goal is the first division. We beat them clearly at home last season. But the draw in the second leg showed that they have matured,” says Haaß.
Due to the better goal difference, Potsdam is one place ahead of TuS. The two defeats in Dresden and against Essen are offset by victories against GWD Minden (31:30) and the almost promoted Dessau-Roßlau (27:20). “This shows again how crazy the league is. “Maybe even crazier this season than last,” says Haaß.
Dräger comeback in the derby
With the exception of Yannick Dräger, the Lübbeckers are making their way to the Brandenburg state capital today with the best line-up. The pivot is expected to be back in the squad against GWD Minden on Saturday, October 21st. The coach “doesn’t feel like the derby plays a role at all. Now comes Potsdam!”
Meanwhile, the Lübbecke hosts have recently strengthened themselves with the Austrian backcourt player Marko Katic from the Spanish first division club Ademar Leon. The 22-year-old replaces Dustin Kraus, who moved to first division club ThSV Eisenach. Katic already played in the 31:22 win at TuS Vinnhorst on Monday, but has not yet scored a goal.
For coach Bob Hanning, TuS is a candidate for promotion. He praises the “very good personnel policy. We had a good second leg against them last season, but now they are even stronger.”
