Potsdam Handball Team Draws in Intense Match Against Ludwigshafen Owls

Potsdam. How high the grapes of the Potsdam handball team hang became clear on Saturday evening in the MBS Arena. After the final siren, the eagles looked at each other in despair, the owls from Ludwigshafen – still in the first division in 2021 – cheered for an away counter in front of 600 spectators in the team circle. A 26:26 (12:12) was on the scoreboard after 60 rarely high-quality but intense minutes. “We have this requirement for ourselves, wanting to win every game,” said VfL coach Bob Hanning, who conceded the equalizer with his team four seconds before the end of the game, which led to the promoted team losing their first point in the third league game. “I saw two different halves. In the end I’m happy with the point,” said guest coach Michel Abt.

First VfL goal after eight minutes

In the early stages, the goals of both teams seemed sealed, including VfL captain Maxim Orlov from the seven-meter line. It took almost eight minutes for VfL to score their first goal – Nils Lichtlein equalized to make it 1-1. After that, the guests from the Electoral Palatinate initially got going better, Alexander Falk completed a remarkable Kempa trick to make it 5:2. The Owls were able to pull away by just four goals in this phase. Goalkeeper Ziga Urbic robbed the hosts, who only scored three goals in the first quarter of an hour, the last nerve with several saves.

“In between, I had the feeling that we were demoted to extras in a game of owls,” explained Hanning. On the other side, Lasse Ludwig also made the usual strong save for VfL, which is why Potsdam steadily narrowed the gap in the minutes that followed – Vasilije Kaludjerovic scored with great will from the back, Moritz Sauter made it 12:12, which was still the case after 30 minutes .

After the change of sides, both teams had teething problems, just like in the first half, especially technical errors, there were too many on both sides. Both the eagles and the owls had to work hard for every goal. VfL had the momentum on their side for the first time in the 39th minute when Lichtlein scored to make it 15:14 – equivalent to Potsdam’s first lead ever. But it remained exciting because, among other things, a double majority was played badly. Only eight minutes before the end Sauter achieved the first three-goal lead, Marcel Nowak even extended the lead to 24:20 (54th).

“Were rewarded for the risk”

Little things made the pendulum swing back to the owl side in the final phase, Sauter showed nerves from seven meters out, Ludwigshafen suddenly scored again in attack. A 6-2 run within six minutes secured a well-deserved point for the guests, who sacrificed their goalkeeper for a seventh field player in their last possession.

“We were rewarded for the risk. That shows that our heads are up in spite of two previous defeats”, praised Abt. Hanning summed up: “The owls were perfectly adjusted to us. It was a good fight and fair dealings. We’ll keep going.” This coming Saturday, when HSC Coburg will be making a guest appearance at the Adlerhorst from 7 p.m.
