NEW YORK — Just days after torrential rains battered parts of the region, causing deadly flooding and washed out roads, another round of potentially severe storms could wreak havoc across all three states.
Anyone looking for a cool end to what has been a downright sweaty week should prepare for some mixed news.
After a short morning break between afternoon storms, more flooding storms return to all three states Friday night. A couple of isolated thunderstorms were on the radar overnight, with more thunderstorms expected later in the evening.

With so much moisture in the air, The Weather Authority says Friday’s storms are capable of producing hourly rainfall rates of between 1.5 and 2.5 inches. That’s enough to cause flash flooding.

Expect scattered showers throughout the weekend. Saturday seems to be the driest day with only a pop-up shower or two possible. Sunday could be the rainiest of the three days.
By the time the weekend is over, 2 to 3 inches of rain can be expected, with isolated areas getting more than that. The humidity everyone loves so much… probably won’t break until the middle of next week.
The totals will not be anywhere near the 7-9 inches seen in Orange and Putnam counties last weekend. There was so much rain that it hit suddenly, gravity led to a flash flood emergency being issued, a rarity that happens maybe once a year.
Strong storms on Sunday proved fatal. Conditions worsened to the point where the Orange County Executive and the Governor of New York called for a state of emergency. Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus said the death of a woman in her 30s who was reportedly trying to evacuate her home with her dog and was swept away by a flash flood was under investigation.
