Isolated strong to severe storms are possible in Minnesota on Wednesday afternoon and evening, according to meteorologist Jonathan. As a slow-moving cold front moves southward through central and southern Minnesota, the potential for severe storms arises. However, the risk of severe storms diminishes as daylight hours fade away.
Currently, there are storms developing in southwestern and central Minnesota that could strengthen into a few strong storms before sunset. As the cold front progresses towards the Iowa border, it will stall out on Thursday. This stationary front will then lift back north as a warm front on Thursday evening. During the evening and overnight hours, severe storms are possible in west-southwest Minnesota, closer to the warm front. However, there will be a weakening trend as the storms move eastward overnight into Friday morning.
Friday daytime is expected to remain mostly dry, but storms will redevelop late in the afternoon and evening. Isolated severe storms are possible during this time, mainly before 10 PM. Rainfall amounts of about 0.25 to 0.75 inches are expected overnight Thursday through Friday evening in most of Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Some areas may experience localized higher rainfall totals.
