Potential Flooding and Landslides as Tropical Storm Norma Approaches Mexican Coasts

This Sunday, October 22, the National Meteorological Service, official source of the Government of Mexico, announced that caution must be taken with the forecasts related to Tropical Storm Norma due to its approach to the coasts of Sinaloa.

During the afternoon-night Norma will impact the north coast, causing occasional rains in said state. In addition, the cloud bands will cause intense rains in the south of Chihuahua and in the west of Durango, as well as heavy to very heavy rains in the north and west of Mexico.

“Such rains could increase the levels of rivers and streams, in addition to causing landslides and flooding in low areas of the aforementioned states,” it was detailed in a statement.

On the other hand, during the night of this Sunday Cold Front 7 will approach the northwest of the country, causing strong gusts of wind in Baja California.

Intense rains with torrential moments (150 to 250 mm): Sinaloa. Very heavy rains with intense moments (75 to 150 mm): Chihuahua (south) and Durango (west). Heavy rains with very strong moments (50 to 75 mm): Baja California Sur, Sonora (south) and Chiapas. Intervals of showers with occasional heavy rains (25 to 50 mm): Coahuila (north), Nayarit, Jalisco, Michoacán, Guerrero and Oaxaca. Intervals of showers (5 to 25 mm): Colima, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, San Luis Potosí, Guanajuato, State of Mexico and Morelos. Isolated rainfall (0.1 to 5 mm): Baja California, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, Querétaro, Hidalgo, Mexico City, Puebla, Veracruz and Tabasco. Temperatures Maximum temperatures of 35 to 40 °C: Baja California, Sonora, Tamaulipas, Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo. Maximum temperatures of 30 to 35 °C: Baja California Sur, Coahuila, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Veracruz and Tabasco.
