There is a possibility that this data was widely available in the US company, according to the data protection authority in the German federal state of Brandenburg, where “Tesla” has a large production facility.
“If this turns out to be true, then this would be an extremely serious issue from the point of view of data protection, as a large number of individuals around the world are affected,” the institution explains.
The German newspaper “Handelsblatt” reported that informants handed over about 100 gigabytes of data that could have been obtained from “Tesla”. This information relates to customers, employees and business projects.
The automaker told the newspaper that a former employee who breached confidentiality obligations could be to blame for this data leak.
Meanwhile, the Brandenburg data protection authority says that this information applies not only to the employees of Tesla’s Brandenburg factory, but also to those working in other German and European factories.
