Federal officials could close two overdose prevention centers that are run by a nonprofit organization in Manhattan.
As reported by the New York Times, the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York has warned that OnPoint NYC is operating in violation of federal, state and local laws.
The organization’s strategy, known as supervised consumption, consists of letting people use illicit drugs in special centers, under the watchful eye of supervisors who can intervene if something goes wrong.
The centers, in East Harlem and Washington Heights, were licensed by the mayor in 2021 and are the only such sites openly operating in the nation.
The centers are considered illegal because a federal law prohibits people from maintaining properties where controlled drugs such as fentanyl and crack, among others, are consumed.
