Excess fat in the abdomen is associated with several diseases such as diabetes and disease cardiovascular. In men, the accumulation of fat in the abdomen is also associated with risk prostate cancer.
The link between a bloated stomach or obesity abdominal cancer with prostate cancer revealed in a study published in the journal Cancer Causes & Control in April. The study was led by five researchers from the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (National Institute of Scientific Research) with support from the Canadian Cancer Society. Prior to this study, it was known that obesity was generally associated with prostate cancer. The study involved more than 1,900 adult men with the oldest 75 years between 2005 and 2012. During the study, researchers measured the participants’ waist and hip circumference, height, and body mass index (BMI).
Studies have shown that abdominal obesity appears to be associated with a greater risk of developing aggressive prostate cancer. In addition, researchers also found that the increase in BMI experienced by men will be accompanied by an increased risk of advanced prostate cancer. The researchers added that men with a waist circumference of 40 inches (101.6 cm) or more appeared to have an even higher risk of advanced aggressive prostate cancer.
No less interesting, general obesity does not appear to be a contributing factor to prostate cancer. However, abdominal obesity or distended abdomen can trigger the proliferation of prostate cancer cells.
“Abdominal obesity causes hormonal and metabolic variations that can promote hormone-dependent cancer cell growth,” said Eric Vallieres from the University of Montreal, as reported by the University of Montreal. EatThis.
According to Vallieres, abdominal obesity is believed to be associated with decreased testosterone levels. In addition, abdominal obesity also appears to be associated with chronic or long-term inflammation. These two factors are considered to play a role in the incidence of aggressive tumors.
According to lead researcher Marie-Elise Parent, the new findings could increase the opportunities for doctors to take preventive measures in their patients. One of them is by monitoring men who have risk factors such as distended stomach more closely. Recognizing risk factors and making efforts to prevent cancer is a big step.
“Because the most difficult to treat it,” said Parent.
