PostNord sends layoff notices to all employees, closes down 15 terminals due to strike by LO and YS unions

The case is updated

PostNord has sent layoff notices to all employees, with a few exceptions. In addition, they are closing down 15 out of a total of 18 terminals, press manager Haakon Nikolai Olsen confirms to Nettavisen.

– It is a bad situation, says Olsen.

The reason for the layoffs is that LO and YS have chosen to go on strike. This coming Friday, the unions have announced that they will withdraw another 15,000 members. This affects PostNord in particular.

– The scope is so large that it will not be possible to operate responsibly as long as the strike lasts. Therefore, we are forced to lay off all employees, with a few critical exceptions, Olsen explains.

Those who are members of LO have received a so-called conditional layoff notice. Those who are not unionized or belong to another union are laid off without conditions.

– This applies from Friday morning. If the strike is called off within that time, we will maintain normal operations and withdraw the layoff notices, says Olsen.

This is layoff

  • Lay-off is a temporary arrangement where the employee is required to take time off from work and the employer is at the same time exempted from his salary obligation. The employment relationship remains and it is assumed that the work stoppage is only temporary.
  • Conditional redundancies apply when a strike or lockout occurs in your own company. If there is a strike, and the company therefore needs to lay off employees, the company must send out a layoff notice.
  • During the first three weeks of the layoff (15 days), you normally receive salary from the employer during layoff. This is called the employer’s period. If you are made redundant, you can receive unemployment benefit for up to 26 weeks during a period of 18 months.

  • The employer will not be obliged to pay wages during the first part of the layoff, when the layoff is due to a strike in the company. You are only entitled to unemployment benefits if your salary or working conditions cannot be affected by the outcome of the strike.
