PostNL cannot fully cope with the high demand for parcels in the Netherlands. The Dutch parcel deliverer delivered a record number of more than 10 million parcels this week, but “to his regret” also had to disappoint customers and web shops. PostNL confirmed this after reporting by the Dutch broadcaster NOS.

According to a spokeswoman, the company is at the limits of its capacity. As a result, it happens more than once that PostNL cannot pick up or deliver all packages. As a result, packages remain at web stores.
According to PostNL, it is the first time that something like this has happened. The parcel deliverer already took peak traffic into account and deployed more people and resources than usual. The hustle and bustle in the inner cities last weekend, with shops even having to close by order of the mayor, has created even more crowds, according to the company.
PostNL could not give numbers. That also differs per webshop. Of the 1.5 million parcels delivered daily, 95 percent goes according to schedule, PostNL continues to ask customers to return shipments after the Sinterklaas rush.
Bpost breaks record
It also remains extremely busy for parcel deliverers in Belgium. Not only was there the just-ended lockdown in which the non-essential stores were closed, but shopping boom days like Black Friday and Cyber Monday are just behind us. And the end-of-year period is anyway busy in packets, with shopping for the holidays.
For example, bpost has again broken records in our country on Monday and Tuesday, says the spokeswoman on Wednesday, each time with “well over 600,000” parcels per day. With the current resources and people, the company can accommodate that growth at the moment. Additional measures are not necessary at this time. There is not really a backlog, it is delivered within 2-3 days after arrival of a package at bpost. The postal company has no insight into what happens at the webshop itself.
