Postgame Instant Analysis: New York Islanders vs Seattle Kraken | Seattle Kraken

The Kraken came home for the second game of the first back-to-back of the season and made it worth their fans’ while.

After the Islanders scored the game’s opening goal, the Kraken scored twice to establish a lead. The visitors would tie it up and even take a lead of their own, but Seattle wouldn’t be deterred. They fought back to end regulation knotted at 3-3, played through overtime, and won the first shootout of the season after Oliver Bjorkstrand, Jordan Eberle and Kailer Yamamoto converted in the eight-round skills battle to secure the 4-3 win.

Let’s look at the game “by the numbers.”

  • The Kraken earned this win. They generated 54.95-percent of all shot volume and 60-percent of all shot quality in 5-on-5 play.
  • The Matty Beniers line was the most effective offensively of any of the Kraken’s forward combos (although all were solid!).
  • Seattle bested the Islanders with speed creating eight scoring chances off the rush while allowing only three against.
  • For the first time this season, the Kraken didn’t have a single even-strength goal.
  • Seattle’s three power play tallies is the most in any one game this season.
  • The Kraken scored two power play goals in the first period. It marks the third time in franchise history that’s happened in the opening frame and the fifth time the organization has had multiple power play goals in the same period.
  • Philipp Grubauer in regulation and overtime allowed exactly as much as he should – but it’d be worthwhile to figure out a way to quantify the value of his performance in the shootout turning away six of eight shooters. And the goaler should get extra credit for a poke save late in the game.
  • Oliver Bjorkstrand earned the highest game score of any Kraken skater. On the scoreboard he earned one assist, but beyond scoring points, he tied for the lead among all skaters in the game in controlled entries (7); had two scoring chances off the rush (T-1) and was second to Jordan Eberle in controlled entries for the Kraken (9).
  • Eeli Tolvanen led the Kraken in individual shot quality in 5-on-5 play off his eight shot attempts. He also had one assist.
  • Semyon Varlamov came into this game with shutouts in his two previous road games, but tonight the Kraken bested him as he allowed almost two more goals than he should have.
